A CHILD teacher who was fatally attacked by a stranger while on an evening jog has been named.
Ashling Murphy, 23, was violently attacked along a canal in Cappincur, Tullamore, Co . Offaly, at about 4pm yesterday.
The talented commercial musician, who works at Durrow National School, was exercising along a popular route when she was targeted.
Gardai believes the suspect – believed to be from outside the area – Random and gratuitous attacks.
A man in his 40s was arrested following the incident.
It is understood the attack was witnessed by other pedestrians.
The staff were pleased that the victim and her attacker did not know each other.
Suspects can be detained for 24 hours before it is issued or charged.

An autopsy has yet to be performed on the young woman’s body.
‘FULLY RANDOM ORDER’
A source said: ‘This was a completely random attack on a young woman who had just gone out for an evening jog.
“It was also a very violent attack and the young woman was seriously injured.”
ONE Garda A family liaison officer has been appointed for Ashling’s family.
A case conference was held on the shocking murder at Tullamore Garda station last night.
Meanwhile, local councilor Declan Harvey, who uses the canal as his regular exercise route, told the Irish Sun: “Through the pandemic, we’ve all been healthy because of it. is the place for a walk by the canal, so peaceful and pleasant on a sunny day like today.
“I don’t know how well it will be used after today’s tragedy, how many people will use it, how people will feel on it, I don’t know.
“I’ll be scared when my wife goes down there on her own now.
“I wanted to send my condolences to the family, I just couldn’t help it. As this happened on a bright, sunny Wednesday evening at four o’clock.
“I’m surprised this place doesn’t have many people.
“It’s heartbreaking for both the family and the people of Tullamore.
“It was shocking, the neighbors around me were all shocked, some of them panicked when they took their children down there for a walk.
“God help the family it’s unbelievable that the poor girl was out for a run and the family had to receive this news tonight, so heartbreaking.”
Minister Simon Harris also offered his condolences to Ashling’s family last night.
He said: “A young woman who simply ran away in the afternoon and was brutally killed. Thinking of her and her family and community tonight and their unimaginable pain.
“We must all take action to end violence against women. We all have a responsibility.”
Mary Lou McDonald, leader of Sinn Fein, added: “It’s appalling. A young woman’s life was brutally stolen. In broad daylight. In a crowded place.
“A nightmare for a family, friends and community.”
