ITV viewers have complained about the “dark and dull” scenes in the latest TV series The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe.
The four-part series about John Darwin, now 71, who faked his own death in a kayak accident to claim life insurance money in 2002, has viewers squinting as they look at his screen. them this month.
One viewer said their TV looked “black as ink” on a recent episode, and they further commented on it: “I really can’t watch The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe.”

The new ITV drama – continuing tonight – was filmed at Seaton Carew, in County Durham, where the real life of John and his wife Anne Darwin, now 69, have lived.

Eddie Marsan, 53, who plays John, and Monica Dolan, 53, who plays Anne, have been praised for their performance in the new series, penned by acclaimed screenwriter Chris Lang.
It tells how the Darwins claimed £500,000 insurance and lied to their sons that John was dead. They later moved to Panama, but John returned to the UK in 2007, telling police he had amnesia.
The Mirror broke the story, posting a photo of John and Anne at a real estate agent in Panama in 2006, when John was presumed dead.
The couple was jailed for six years. The series was inspired by a book by former Mirror reporter David Leigh.
