The UCF football team swaps jersey numbers for QR codes

This spring, the University of Central Florida (UCF) football team will use QR codes instead of numbers on the back of their jerseys (via SportsLogos.net). The crew showed off their new robes on twitterwith large, custom QR codes under their last names that you can scan to access players’ bios on the UCF website.

In a video Posted by UCF coach Gus Malzahn (who also stamped a QR code on his team polo shirt) you can see exactly how the function actually works. Judging by the video, it looks like UCF will also display players’ QR codes on their home stadium’s jumbotron.

Last year, however, the UCF Knights kept the numbers on the back of their jerseys swapped their last names for Twitter handles. It’s probably for the best that the team kept their last name this time, as I could see how frustrating it could be for fans to search for a player’s Twitter name – or shirt number – only to find out their full name (if not). already in their grasp).

You might not associate modern technology with a team named after a medieval soldier, but it’s certainly a creative use of the QR code and a clever way to encourage players. I’m just not sure how well it will work when you actually watch the game.

When you’re in the stands, are you supposed to zoom in extremely far with your phone while trying to track a QR code attached to a player sprinting across a field? And when you watch a show or replay, you just have to wait for a close-up? Of course, it’s enough to grab media attention and perhaps lure potential recruits to move the school up their list.
