UFC legend Chael Sonnen has admitted he is “drunk” with excitement after watching Khamzat Chimaev train for his clash with Gilbert Burns.
Chimaev is considered by many to be one of the promotion’s most exciting prospects and has garnered his attention with four opening wins.
The Swedish star is now rewarded with a big shot in 2nd place, first place Korean rivals Burns will take place at UFC 273 on April 9.
And Sonnen has stated that he is leaning towards a Chimaev victory and believes he is motivated to enter the fight.
“For now, I’m leaning towards Chimaev. But I’m intoxicated with Chimaev’s excitement,” Sonnen said. Podcast The Fight With Teddy Atlas.
“No fighter has had the wind in his back like Chimaev. Just need to talk to gain momentum. I got to watch him practice for the first time last week. All rumors are true.
“There is a fear in the unknown and the mystery here lies in Chimaev? What will he do in rounds 4 and 5?
“Probably but I’m not willing to give a nod to a title for a guy who has won matches against opponents that are not rated higher than the No. 1 contender.”
Chimaev’s rise to prominence has been fast-tracked in the face of Burns but wants to face several other top contenders including Belal Muhammed.
Previously he fought a tough battle with Coronavirus but returned with a dominant win over Li Jingliang last year to remind fans of his sheer talent.
Some believe he could soon face a lightning strike against welterweight champion Kamaru Usman in the lack of competition for the Nigerian crown.
Usman has since ruled out Chimaev as his next opponent and focused instead on a likely next rematch with Leon Edwards.

UFC President White Dana also heaped praise on ‘Borz’ and believes the rising star will continue to be kept away.
“Khamzat Chimaev is one of the worst guys I’ve ever met and is literally ready to fight, no matter what the timeframe or anything,” he said. Jim Rome. “No one wants to fight this guy.
“Everybody wants to come out on social media and say this or say that. But when it really happened, nobody tried to fight Khamzat Chimaev.
“I don’t blame them. But at the end of the day when you’re a professional boxer – this is what you do – you should look at a guy with as much hype and bravery as Chimaev, as a giant. . chance.”
