Virgin Media has told its customers not to place their routers in the sun and in cooler areas of their home.

The company states on its website: “No one wants a hot hub summer! Although we carefully test our hubs at various temperatures, they do better out of bright sunlight, just like your phone or laptop.

“But that doesn’t mean you should stick the hub in a closet or hide it behind your TV.”

Your wireless router should be in a shaded area, but it should still not be obstructed by objects that may be interfering with your signal.

Some items like closets, refrigerators, and fish tanks will interfere with your WiFi signal.

Virgin Media added: “If the hub gets too hot, it can slow down your connection or even stop altogether.

“A good placement of the hub could also mean greater WiFi range.”

Your wireless router, like most electrical devices, generates heat while it is operating, so additional heat can cause problems.

Virgin Media hasn’t reported any widespread problems with its routers, but has published some other helpful tips on its ‘Boost your broadband for summer’ page.

No matter what brand you use, it’s best to keep your router indoors in a cool and spacious place.

There are a number of ways you can boost the WiFi signal in your home.

Moving electronic devices like lights and your TV can do a world of good, while reducing microwave use can also speed up your connection.

That’s because, according to UK Watchdog, they can slow down your WiFi by interfering with your router’s signal Ofcom.

And those aren’t the only things that threaten to hamper your Internet access.

Fish tanks, radiators, cordless phones, and speakers can all cause Internet problems if placed too close to your router.
