The unprecedented US sharing of crucial intelligence information prevented Russia’s capture of Kiev

America helped thwart Moscow’s efforts to take Kyiv and repel its advances elsewhere by sharing information so detailed that Ukraine knew exactly when and where Russian bombs would fall, it turns out.

In an unprecedented intelligence-sharing operation, US spy agencies leaked the coordinates of Russian forces and planes to Ukrainian troops, allowing them to forestall attacks.

According to NBC News, intelligence arranged for Ukraine to shoot down a Russian plane carrying troops to Hostomel Airport in the Kyiv suburbs in the early days of the war. Shooting down the plane helped shatter Moscow’s hopes of flooding the area with troops and equipment.

Earlier reports suggested several Russian helicopters were hit by missiles before reaching the airport. An attempt to seize control of a military airfield at Vasylkiv, south of Kyiv, also met with fierce resistance.

Although Russian forces briefly captured the airport, they were unable to use Hostomel as an airlift to replenish their resources and eventually capture Kyiv.

American intelligence has also repeatedly helped Ukraine protect its own planes by forestalling Russian missile attacks.

US officials believe the scale of the split – unprecedented for a non-NATO ally – was critical to Ukraine’s success in repelling Vladimir Putin’s advance, despite superior Russian forces. US aid, in particular, has prevented Russia from gaining dominance over the Ukrainian skies.

In some cases, American intelligence meant that Ukraine repositioned its air defense systems or aircraft just before they were attacked.

“The Russian military has literally scratched empty fields where air defense installations were once built,” a US official told NBC. “It had a tremendous impact on the capabilities of the Russian military on the ground.”

The CIA is also devoting “significant resources” to protecting Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine’s president and a top target for Moscow.

The agency is working with Ukrainian officials on “how best to move him” and making sure he’s not located with the rest of his chain of command, an American official told NBC.

The network said it had other examples of US intelligence agencies giving a boost but that it did not release them for fear of jeopardizing the information channels.

The White House National Security Council did not comment on the incidents, in which the US allegedly helped thwart Russian plans, but said: “We regularly provide Ukrainians on the battlefield with detailed and timely intelligence to assist them.” to defend their country against Russian aggression and will continue to do so.”

Ukrainian officials have been more cautious in praising the US intelligence cooperation. “It’s gotten better,” a government source said.

It began after Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 but has been increasing since the start of the war in Ukraine in February.

At the start of the invasion, US intelligence officials had blocked the exchange of information that could lead to deadly attacks on Russians, fearing it would put Washington in direct conflict with Moscow.

But when the extent of the Russian atrocities became clear, those restrictions were lifted. It has allowed the US to share exact coordinates for the positions of Russian forces for Ukrainians to fire on them.

Lt. Gen. Scott Berrier, director of US Defense Intelligence, said “I would say where we are is revolutionary in terms of what we have been able to achieve,” when describing the coordination with the Ukrainian counterparts in Congress last month.

Others have noted that not only must the strength of US intelligence be recognized, but also the agility of Ukrainians to respond.

Analysts have noted that in addition to covert intelligence, Ukrainian officials have effectively used other tools at their disposal — such as satellite imagery and intercepting walkie-talkies used by Russian soldiers. (© Telegraph Media Group Ltd. 2022)
