The US is expanding sanctions against Russia after Putin illegally annexed four regions of Ukraine

The Biden administration on Friday tightened sanctions against hundreds of individuals and companies with links to Russia in response to the Kremlin’s annexation of four regions in Ukraine.

The new restrictions target companies outside Russia suspected of helping military suppliers circumvent the original sanctions. Others added to the sanctions list include relatives of members of Russia’s National Security Council. The wife and two adult children of Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and the wife and adult children of Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu are now under sanctions.

The Commerce Department also said it would add 57 companies to its export control list. The department also warned that countries providing material support to Russia and Belarus could face penalties.

“Russia has four new regions,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said, referring to a sham election that he said added Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia to Russia.

President Biden condemned Russia’s annexation of Russian-occupied territories, saying it violated international law.

“Make no mistake: these actions have no legitimacy,” Biden said.
