The USA and Mexico book tickets for the World Cup finals

The United States and Mexico booked tickets to this year’s World Cup in Qatar in the final round of CONCACAF qualifying.

The United States, who missed out on the 2018 tournament, lost 2-0 to Costa Rica but continued as did Mexico, who beat El Salvador 2-0.

Canada, who qualified for Sunday’s qualifiers, lost 1-0 in Panama but still topped their group.

Costa Rica finished fourth in the standings and meet New Zealand in an intercontinental qualifier in Qatar in June to earn another spot at the finals.

On the final day of CONCACAF qualifying, the United States knew that a win, draw or loss by less than six goals would ensure their return to the World Cup.

Costa Rica took the lead in the 51st minute through a Juan Pablo Vargas header before Anthony Contreras doubled the lead from close range shortly after.

The United States, whose roster includes just four players from the side that failed to make it to Russia in 2018, held firm the rest of the way to secure qualification.

Uriel Antuna put hosts Mexico ahead in the 17th minute from the left side of the six-yard box before Raul Jimenez converted a penalty just before half-time.

Canada were unable to end an impressive qualifying campaign in Panama with a win, eliminated from the competition by the United States on Sunday.

Gabriel Torres scored the only goal of the game for Panama early in the second half, firing home from the penalty area.

Canada, who made seven line-up changes from Sunday’s game, thought they had equalized with Cyle Larin’s header but it was ruled offside after a video review.

“It’s been a crazy journey for these guys,” said Canada head coach John Herdman.

“We are here, at the head of the group. … And we’re going to Qatar, that’s everything we dreamed of as CONCACAF champions.”
