A video posted on social media appears to show Ukrainian troops shooting dead a captured Russian soldier near a village west of Kyiv.
In the video posted Monday, the New York Times reported independently verifiedA group of Ukrainian soldiers walk among at least four battered Russian fighters who are tied up and covered in blood on a country road near the village of Dmytrivka.
“Look – he’s still alive, he’s gasping for air,” says one member of the group, turning the camera on one of the prisoners gasping for air, his head covered by his jacket and blood-soaked clothes. One of the Ukrainian soldiers fires several shots at the wounded man, who then falls silent.
The person filming the scene then pans across the street where at least three other Russian soldiers are tied up and lying in pools of blood before approaching a Ukrainian militant and saying, “Honour to Ukraine.”
The scene appears to have been filmed as Russian troops followed a Ukrainian ambush of a Russian tank column around March 30 partially withdrawn from the cities west of Kyiv.
The captured soldiers lying on the ground wear white armbands commonly worn by Russian troops, while the soldiers standing and walking around wear the flag insignia and blue armbands associated with the Ukrainian army.
There was no comment from Ukrainian officials on the video.
Over the weekend, Ukrainian and Western leaders condemned Russian forces for war crimes after reports from authorities, NGOs and journalists discovery of corpses of Ukrainian civilians in the city of Bucha, about a dozen kilometers from where the video was shot.
