Ford may have been late in bringing electric vehicles to the road in large numbers compared to the breakneck pace Volkswagen set.

The first all-electric passenger vehicle to roll out of Ford’s Cologne electrified center will be a five-seat mid-size crossover with a range of 500 km.

To meet all that production need, there will be a joint venture in Turkey with two partners to create one of the largest EV battery production facilities around.

It will be located near Ankara and will produce high-nickel NMC cells for assembly into battery array modules. Production is expected to begin mid-decade.

The announcements coincide with a pledge to have no goals by 2035 as well as a pledge to only sell electric vehicles from that date.

It’s no surprise that it is describing the next few years as “critical” in the company’s 120-year history.

It is expected that the first car I will mention will be based on the Volkswagen ID 4 and positioned below the Mach E in the Ford lineup.

The second EV is due next year, and is described as a “sports crossover” and could be based on the Volkswagen ID 5.

Designed as an open vehicle platform, the MEB (modular power tool kit) means manufacturers can electrify their range quickly and at a lower cost.

Ford is working hard to reassure buyers that the cars will be “totally like Fords, drive like Fords”.

To clear the way for all of this highly involved new electric vehicle production, it will discontinue production of the much-criticized Ecosport later this year.

On the basis of strong production growth, Ford said it expects to sell 600,000 EVs a year by 2026.

Around 1.2 million electric cars will be produced in Cologne over a six-year period, hence the decision to invest an additional 2 billion euros in the development of the plant.

“Profitability and speed are now critical to finally achieving the breakthrough of e-mobility in Europe. We are tackling both together with Ford,” said Thomas Schmall of Volkswagen.
