The VW Polo Style is the tiny, tenacious Premier League superstar that runs forever… just like Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante

EVERYONE knows what a supermini is.

They are the Premier League.

We tested the mid-range VW Polo Style trim with 95hp manual at £20,785

If Chelsea ace N'Golo Kante were a car, he would be a Polo. Small, Well Built, Tenacious, Runs Forever

They are Fiesta. They are Corsa. These are Polo, Mini, Ibiza, Clio, 208, Yaris, Jazz and Fabia.

Everyone has heard of them.

They are Salah, De Bruyne, Ronaldo, Rice and Mount.

They all have their own individual talents but they are all class. No matter which team you support, you have to admire them.

But a cross? A Tucson? Kona? Aaron? Kuga? You cannot tell them apart.

Let’s start with one of my favorite superminis, the Honda Jazz. Defender for sure. It’s really brilliant in the back. Jazz has a “magic chair” that can be flipped up like a cinema chair or folded completely flat. You can even stand your bike across the middle of the bike.

Toyota Yaris is like Virgil van Dijk. One of the best places of Europe. One hundred percent reliable. Make everything productive with minimal fuss.

Up front, Fiesta is a heroic striker. Great feet. Always happy. Always hit the target. Britain’s favorite car of the past ten years by country mile.

Then we have Corsa. Not flash like 208, below the same, but all the better for it. And it’s very versatile because you can have a petrol, diesel or electric engine.

Now we come to Polo, the star quarterback, and the topic of today’s road test. If Chelsea ace N’Golo Kante were a car, he would be a Polo. Small, well built, tenacious, runs forever, always giving you exactly what you want. Sound familiar?

I know Kante owns a Mini. But let’s clear that up because with the Golf, the Polo makes VW tick. You might hardly notice from the photos but the Polo has got a bit of a nip/guck to keep it fresh. Honestly, it does.

Good polish

New lights, as well as a light bar that runs across the grille, as well as a standard-fit digital cockpit and stop-and-go cruise control.

There are more cheerful colors available, such as this vibrant Violet. Or purple. And Polo currently has only 5 doors. Pretty much everything else as before.

That means three engine choices, all turbocharged 1 liter at 80hp, 95hp or 110hp. Five-speed manual or seven-speed automatic.

We tried the 95hp manual mid-spec trim for £20,785. It doesn’t disappoint. The interior is smart. Travel and handling are extremely well polished, and we hit 50mpg even with the five-speed box. My daughter has a 66 plate Polo. She tried it. And now she wants to upgrade.

This sequel is not based on anything other than a hunch.

But I think superminis will become even more valuable as we move towards 2030.

Electric vehicles are expensive and many motorists don’t have off-street parking to charge them.

While superminis are good value, fun to drive, easy to own and they will last for years.

The back of the net.
