When you’re in New York City, you no longer have to lug to Long Island or Montauk to enjoy the beach vibe. This summer, Grupo Gitano, the Tulum, Mexico-based culinary tastemaker, unveiled Gitano Island, a 27,000-square-foot waterfront restaurant and beach club on Governors Island. It’s just a five-minute ferry ride from the Battery Maritime Building in Battery Park in Lower Manhattan.
Pen daily for brunch and dinner, featuring modern Mexican fare cooked over an open fire: think lobster rolls, tamales de pipián, crab tostadas, and staples like chorizo con queso and watermelon salad.
And just like Gitano’s Tulum headquarters, expect a soundtrack of classical and nu-disco, house, afrobeats and latin, with big-name live DJs in the works. The ferry is $4; Options from Brooklyn Piers too.
Kildare’s K Club is best known as a world-class golf destination, but on August 4th it’s set to offer a five-star retreat for those whose chakras are out of whack.
The two-day event is hosted by transpersonal trainer Breda McHale Celebration of the Light Retreat Combining life coaching and holistic practices: guided meditations, sunrise yoga, interactive talks, breathwork, a guided hike with Celtic insights and, as the blurb says, “a shamanic journey through the Liffey Weir” – the Liffey has seen a lot, just not shamanism maybe just a first.
Costs from €300 per person based on two people and includes breakfast, two lunches and all activities including an evening ‘fire ceremony’. kclub.ie
If a safari is on your bucket list longer than necessary, why not grab the bull (the rhino?) by the horns with TD Holidays’ 13-night Garden Route & Safari Guided group tour of South Africa starting in Cape Town, home of the majestic Table Mountain and Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.
This trip of a lifetime also includes the south east coast known as the Garden Route, exploring mountains and lagoons, wildlife sanctuaries and – arguably the highlight of the organized tour – a stay at the renowned Kariega Game Reserve, a privately run, family run safari reserve in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, where the “Big Five” wildlife live.
From €3,499 per person from Dublin on 7th October; includes flight, accommodation, tours, transfers, guides (eight nights B&B, three nights full board). Reiseabteilung.com
