Olympics competitor Max George shared the news with fans that he suffered a perforated eardrum during the first episode of the ITV live reality series
The Wanted Max star George has revealed the touching reason he joined The Games despite picking up a painful injury early on the weeklong live show.
The 33-year-old singer took to Instagram on Tuesday to share with fans how his eardrum burst after just one episode of the show.
Max requires hospital treatment after an eardrum injury, to determine if he can continue to compete in the swimming event, as the injury usually takes several weeks to heal.
While Max initially said his future on the ITV reality show was uncertain, he put his full focus on Tuesday evening at the Aquatics Center in London for the swimming events.
Max admitted he decided to participate to impress his mother, who was sitting in the audience of the live show.
He said: “I’m fine – I punctured my eardrum during warm-up for scuba diving so I was a bit dizzy last night.
“I’m not really [good to go] but here I am – and my mother is here too, she was sitting on it, so I wanted to impress her.”
Max shared a video from his bed in his hotel room on Monday night, acknowledging that he suffered a horrific injury on the first day.
He filmed himself as he said: “So the past few days have been a bit difficult. I had a perforated eardrum a few days ago,” he said as he filmed himself.
“I had a lot of dizziness, I had to take a lot of painkillers so I thought I was just dehydrated.
“But fine, I am rehydrated, tomorrow I will go to the hospital to check and make sure everything is fine.
“Fingers crossed, I got the nod to be able to swim. Because it’s an event that I love. Just a rough few days.
“A lot of people ask. I’m fine, just a little wobbly with my ears. And like I said just getting dehydrated because I was on painkillers. “
Contestants joining Max include Love Island alumnus Olivia Attwood, influencer Phoenix Brown, former sober pundit Kevin Clifton, song writer Chelcee Grimes and Harry Potter actor Josh Herdman.
Joining them were Coronation Street actor Colson Smith, newsreader Lucrezia Millarini, Love Island star Wes Nelson, Emmerdale actor Rebecca Sarker, actor Ryan Thomas and model Christine McGuiness.
Love Island’s Chloe Burrows and TV & Radio host Will Njobvu serve as backup, ready to join if the need arises.
Celebrities are competing against each other in a range of challenges including track and pool events on the new ITV series, hosted by Holly Willoughby and Freddie Flintoff of Top Gear.
Cameras show team members being trained and coached by professionals and then competing against each other in hopes of winning a medal.
