“The war against Ukraine is a wake-up call for us that enough is enough” – Taoiseach Micheál Martin

Taoiseach Michéal Martin says he was alarmed by Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, while others were not.

And he says the poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal in Salisbury in 2018 and that of Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006 show how long the Russian regime has been willing to engage in unacceptable behavior.

Micheál Martin was asked by Independent Kerry South TD Cathal Berry about the now infamous Russian TV model in which Ireland disappeared along with Britain in a 500 meter tsunami after a 100 tonne nuclear torpedo drone detonated.

“In my view, the war against Ukraine is a wake-up call for us that enough is enough,” Mr Martin told the Dáil.

“When Crimea was occupied, I remember speaking about it in this House. But there were very few takers,” he said.

“There were quite a few people. I think in general people have been lenient and gentle on Russia for too long.”

He added: “It was interesting to what extent people believed at the time, even when Crimea was happening, that the Russian Federation was attacking fascists in Kyiv. And that’s on record. Statements from back then.”

But Mr Martin said the attack in Salisbury and Litvinenko’s attack in London were all signs that many countries had tolerated Russian action for far too long.

He said: “We must not become complacent in this country either, because there are constant attacks on social media to undermine democracy.”

Mr Martin said there was “anti-Americanism” among some MPs. It was always about everything, he said. When someone criticized the Russian Federation, the answer was what action by the United States was all about.

The Taoiseach made no further comment on the Russian simulation of a nuclear attack on Ireland as part of the British Isles, other than saying that Ireland was committed to increasing defense spending.
