The Warframe publisher’s new game Wayfinder was announced at the Game Awards

WARFRAME publisher Digital Extremes previously teased a new game, Project Skylight. As announced at The Game Awards, we now know it’s called Wayfinder.

If you’re interested in Warframe, Wayfinder will interest you. It is a new character-based online action role-playing game helmed by the creative director of Darksiders and Ruined King: A League of Legends Story.

We had a chance to sit down with some team members and talk about Wayfinder and what new things it will bring to gaming.

Game Director Ryan Stefanelli explained, “We’ve always wanted to make an online game – one that has a world that we can build the game around, one that can grow.

“Although the game is truly a character-based free online action game, we definitely have MMO-like ambitions for it.

“[Wayfinder is a] Culminating our previous experience working on action games like the Darksiders franchise, our first multiplayer game, but also some of the RPGs we’ve worked on, Battle Chasers and Ruined King, and bringing it all together in one online world.

“That’s really what Wayfinder is about. All of our games have adventure as a common element, and Wayfinder takes that to the next level for us by letting people do it online.”

It seems the team is sticking to what they know best, free to play live service games, with plenty of updates to keep their players coming back for more.

But how does Wayfinder differ from Warframe, one of the most popular online games?

Creative Director Joe Madureira says, “When we first started doing this, there were a lot of synergies or similarities with some concept games like Warframe.

“And I think Digital Extremes was very excited about that initially, but we were also very careful not to redo the same floor.

“It’s a completely different game. Obviously it looks very different. The world is a synthesizer fantasy, an arcane pumped world.

“The art style is completely different. We have many touch points and can learn a lot from Digital Extremes’ experience with Warframe and why we were so excited to have them as a partner.”

So what sets the graphic style apart from the other Digital Extremes games?

He continues, “We’re definitely taking it in a different direction, and as far as Soulframe goes, we know as little about it as anyone.

“We rely on Digital Extremes to ensure there is no overlap there. The game’s art style is pretty much an evolution of anything we’ve ever done before.

“We made hand-drawn games. We made games in Unreal [Engine]. This merges the two. We try to get very illustrated concept art.

“When someone says, ‘This screenshot looks like concept art,’ we’re thrilled. Hopefully we can continue to push that and make it look better and better over the years.”

According to the developers, anyone who has played the Darksiders series will “feel right at home playing Wayfinder.”

The focus is on fighting against groups via massive battles with enemies with large health bars, and you can use quick dagger blows or big hammer blows depending on your playstyle.

Wayfinder will have one Closed Playtest starting December 13, and the game will be released in Early Access for PlayStation and PC in Spring 2023.
