The widening fertilizer crisis in Europe threatens the food supply

Europe’s fertilizer shortages worsened after Yara International ASA cut production amid rising gas prices, putting further pressure on the food supply amid the deepening livelihood crisis.

The Norwegian producer said it is further reducing its ammonia capacity to about a third, adding to a spate of European fertilizer restrictions and shutdowns announced this week. Industry researcher CRU Group estimates that Europe has now lost around half of its ammonia capacity and 33% of its nitrogen fertilizers.
