‘The world is a difficult place to be for young people’ – Cillian Murphy in her new book promoting empathy

Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy has released a book that aims to help students become more empathetic.

He’s a Hollywood star who released his first book today Ionbhá: The Book of Empathy for Irelandand it is a collection of thoughts, poems and essays by famous figures of the Irish public.

Cillian said the book covers a “lovely cross-section of society” as it features words written by Presidents Michael D Higgins, Blindboy, Imelda May and Rachael Blackmore.

All proceeds from it go directly into providing programs in Irish schools around the country that teach children to proactively empathize.

The actor said he believes the book and the show are especially important to young people today, because the world is so “bad” right now.

“The book is something we’ve talked about for ages, just to try and put this idea of empathy into common vocabulary/native language,” he said.

“We want people to start talking about it, and we’re promoting this empathy program in schools. It’s been rolled out in so many high schools across the country.

“The world right now is very weird, and I think it’s a difficult place to live in, especially for young people these days.”

Cillian added that life can be especially difficult for children and teenagers today, as they spend a lot of time online and that can be emotionally demanding.

“This whole thing about empathy is about connection, the most basic description of walking in someone else’s shoes or seeing someone else’s point of view,” he says.

“We did studies on these kids in schools who actually went through the course and all the kids showed higher levels of empathy.”

Speaking to Dermot & Dave on Today FM, the Peaky Blinders star confirmed that the hit TV show is being made into a movie.

In August of this year, show creator Steven Knight confirmed that the script was almost done.

“Yes, I believe so. I still haven’t read it (the script) but that’s the plan, the plan is to make a movie and continue the story but in the world of cinema rather than on television,” said Cillian.

“The TV part of the story is over. If there’s more to the story to tell, I’m there, I haven’t read it yet but it’s clearly close.”
