There’s a new Persona 5 game, but it’s a gacha for smartphones
Persona 5 is easily one of the most iconic JRPGs of modern times, so it stands to reason that there’s more mileage to be had from Joker and his gang. However, we can’t say that we had a gacha adaptation for smartphones on our bingo card, but it is exactly what was announced earlier this week. There is currently no start date assigned to the project and only a China release has been confirmed at the time of writing.
Despite this, the game with the full name Persona 5: The Phantom X will be immediately familiar to fans of the main console game. While introducing a new group of Phantom Thieves, the gameplay trailer is full of recognizable locations and activities. Development is being led by Perfect World Games and Black Wings Game Studio, but SEGA is helping – and the protagonist was designed by Atlus’ Shigenori Soejima.
The premise and gameplay loop is pretty much identical to the main game: you spend the day at school to finish classes, and afterwards you can participate in various extracurricular activities – including playing baseball and visiting other worlds. Obviously the twist here is that there will inevitably be a gacha element. So expect to unlock other characters and possibly even Personas by investing in-game currency in slot-style systems.
It’s clearly all heavily inspired by console gaming, so it’ll be interesting to see just how much original content is included here. But honestly, we wouldn’t bet on a Western release anyway – it’s unquestionably aimed at the smartphone-obsessed Asian market.
