Vera Pauw praised her Irish side after a heroic draw in Gothenburg in the face of a “constant storm” against a Sweden side who are second in world football.
A deflected goal from Katie McCabe gave Ireland the lead just before half-time and, despite several good saves from goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan keeping Sweden at bay, they eventually leveled with ten minutes remaining.
Nonetheless, Ireland clinched a famous point and the Ireland manager was very proud of her players.
“I’m so proud when I was in the huddle I said that and with a bad word too.
“It’s incredible, second in the world and we could have won. We were very lucky to stay in the game but we executed the game plan phenomenally.
“The thing is you can only do that if you’re fresh when you start the game and we’re always working on that and then execution makes the game and players do that.
“It was a constant storm, relentless and we shifted well but in the end we didn’t get forward and that made it difficult to keep the ball out.”
After the game, McCabe added that she was delighted to be included in the goalscoring charts and hoped the result could be a stepping stone for Ireland to reach World Cup qualification.
“I’m just happy when they go in,” she said.
“We have three games left so we’re going to take it step by step. We’re fully focused on the task at hand but hopefully we can do it.”
