“They throw everything at us” – Russian forces try to repel Ukrainian troops in battle for Kherson

Ukrainian forces in the south are retaking Russian-held areas, but soldiers wounded in the fighting have claimed at great cost.

Although Ukraine has recaptured a number of villages under Russian control, its well-armed enemies are not fleeing without a fight, Ukrainian soldiers have said.

Exhausted medics work overtime in overcrowded hospitals as the major counter-offensive claims a growing number of casualties.

Moscow’s armed forces are said to have tried to stop Ukrainian advances with tanks, artillery and helicopters.

“They throw everything at us,” said a 22-year-old Ukrainian soldier. “They have a lot of equipment, but few men.”

Ivan (32), a soldier, announced that his unit had captured a village from the Russians in the early hours of fighting that began early Monday morning.

Their orders were: “Go in, piss them off, take back what’s ours,” said the wounded soldier The Wall Street Journal.

“The boys are in a fighting mood,” said Ivan, who was hospitalized with a concussion after a rocket launcher was fired a few feet away. “You move forward.”

When the Russians flee, they leave a trail of booby-trapped dead comrades and equipment, he added.

“We’re advancing in some areas and getting hit in others,” said Pavlo, 22, who also suffered a concussion in a fight.

The only details coming from the battlefield appear on Ukrainian and Russian channels on the Telegram messaging app as Kyiv restricts public announcements to ensure operational security.

Ukraine’s Southern Operations Command yesterday claimed its forces had killed 201 Russian soldiers and destroyed 12 T-72 tanks, 18 armored vehicles and six ammunition depots in the past 24 hours of fighting.

A pro-Russian source claimed the invading force was being attacked by fresh Ukrainian forces armed with NATO weapons, rather than the “ragged formations” made up of “poorly trained reservists” they faced before.

According to US intelligence, Russia is suffering from “serious manpower shortages” and is bringing back wounded soldiers to fill gaps in its defenses.

Ukraine focused most of its attacks on isolating the remnants of Russian forces to the south, destroying bridges that Moscow used to supply its troops.

Western analysts monitoring the conflict say Ukraine is meeting its tactical goals of improving its long-term positions

“We still maintain that Ukrainian activities in this direction fulfill tactical goals of improving Ukrainian positions, and not operational goals of pushing the Russians across the Dnipro River,” said military analyst Rochan Consulting.

“However, the situation is fluid. When Russian defenses collapse, tactical successes can lead to operational victory.”
