‘They turned me down’: Martin McDonagh, Oscar winner on why he has a grudge against the Abbey Theater

Oscar-winning screenwriter and director Martin McDonagh has said he will never lose his “grudge” with the Abbey Theatre, after they turned down a string of his plays early in his career Karma.

for winning the Best Screenplay award at the Venice Film Festival – where he received a standing ovation for the 15 minutes he devoted to Inisherin’s Banshees – McDonagh talks about the pain of receiving rejections from the world famous theater studio as a young writer.

“I left school at the age of 16. So from then to age 24, had eight years of struggling and feeling like I was getting better as a writer – but still getting rejected.

“And it was painful. The hardest time came at the end of that period, when I could feel things were getting better – but then I still got rejected,” he said.

“I remember the Monastery rejected all subsequent plays that were staged by Druid [the ground-breaking Galway theatre company]. That’s why I will never work with them again. That was really bad.

“Those plays were Leenane’s beauty queen and Lonely West – you know, good plays – and I still remember their rejection letter. “

Asked if it hurt, the 52-year-old said: “At that stage, it’s strange, anyway, I start to get a little arrogant, or maybe confident, even though I know they’re bound. tied very tightly. So at that point I felt like: ‘Maybe that’s your problem, if you can’t see it, well…’

“And I’ve maintained that feeling with Abbey ever since, even though everyone has changed and now they’re probably a good group.”

Asked why he is still not working with the theater, he said with a smile: “Because I like to bear a grudge. It was painful.

“And I think this movie is also about the pain of a breakup.

“I try to tap into the sadness I had when someone dumped me – and that’s the same as what this story is about art or struggling to create, or anything else.”
