‘This is for Creeslough, this is for Donegal’ – Amber Barrett pays tribute to famous playoff goal

Even after scoring the most important goal of her career, Amber Barrett still had the people of Donegal on her mind.

The Donegal native sped out of the way of Scotland’s defense and scored the decisive goal at Hampden Park as Ireland qualified for their first-ever Women’s World Cup after a 1-0 win in the play-offs.

After cornering the ball, an emotional Barrett kissed her black armband in a poignant message to those who lost their lives and were injured in the blast at Creeslough in Donegal.

Speaking to RTÉ after the game, Barrett opened up about her relationship with Creeslough and how emotional the past week has been for her.

“I know Creeslough like the back of my hand,” she said.

“Both my grandparents were born and raised in Creeslough. I spent all my upbringing there, summer and Christmas”, every year I go back on the scene, I couldn’t put it into words, the last few days I’ve been in a somber mood.

“This is the best day of my life in terms of football but if you put it in perspective we are not scratching the surface of what happened there on Friday. I dedicate this result, this game, this goal to the ten beautiful souls who died on Friday and their families. You have certainly touched our lives. This is for Creeslough, this is for Donegal.”

Barrett also described how the tense final minutes were for her after her brilliant goal.

“I have nothing to say right now,” Barrett said.

“It was the longest 20 minutes of my life. When that goal fell, I was checking my watch every 30 seconds. I don’t know what we just did, I can’t believe it. This is for all the little kids growing up, now they have something to dream about. I’m so happy to be a part of this team.

“My first touch took me away. I did it with the old trusty and big toe. I just put it in the corner. If Vera wants to win the World Cup, she had better put me on the plane!”

Barrett’s goal plays over and over, and you can relive the magical moment below.
