This is how much it costs to use a mobile phone abroad this summer

AS the summer holidays fast approach, many of us will be flying somewhere sunny for a well-deserved break.

For thousands of Britons, it will be their first trip abroad since the pandemic, which grounded flights and urged travelers to conduct endless Covid tests.

But a raft of new regulations have come into effect since the pandemic, including updates to mobile roaming charges.

With the Brexit trade deals also affecting charges some customers may need to check this as it could cost you a lot more to send a short SMS.

But worry not because The Sun Online has broken down all the charges that might affect you and hopefully save you from a nasty bill when you return home.

VODAFONE

Vodafone changed its fees back in January 2022, but only on certain plans.

Anyone on a Vodafone Pay Monthly plan that started before August 11, 2021 will not have roaming changes on your plan.

However, if you started after August 11, 2021, there is now a fee for using your plan’s allowances in most European countries, depending on your zone.

Check which zone you will be in on Vodafone:

Zone A: the Republic of Ireland and the Isle of Man. There are no roaming charges.

Zone B: 49 destinations, most of them in Europe and EU member states.

For anyone with a Vodafone Pay Monthly plan started on or after August 11, 2021, roaming costs £2 per day.

Zone C: 32 destinations, from Australia and Barbados to the US and South Africa.

For anyone with a Vodafone Pay Monthly plan started on or after August 11, 2021, roaming costs £6 a day.

Zone D: 75 targets, from Afghanistan and Argentina to Uzbekistan and Vietnam. For anyone with a Vodafone Pay Monthly plan started on or after August 11, 2021, roaming costs £6 a day.

SKY MOBILE

Sky Mobile lets you use your phone at a range of holiday destinations, but charges depend on your location.

You can check the full list by going to the Sky Mobile website.

But you can also purchase a Roaming Passport Plus, which gives you access to your UK data, calling and SMS plans for just £2 for 24 hours.

This pass is active when you are in one of the Roaming Passport Plus destinations where you can call, text or use data.

TESCO MOBILE

Tesco phones are already set up for use abroad.

You just have to turn it on when you arrive and it will automatically connect to a local network that will send you a welcome text.

This welcome text usually tells you how much calls and texts and data cost.

For example, a call from Spain to the UK will cost you 55p per minute.

Check your fee on the Tesco website.

BT MOBILE

If you are a BT customer, the Roam Like Home feature may be available to you.

This allows you to use your UK calls, texts and data abroad to 47 destinations without paying extra roaming charges.

It covers major European destinations including France, Spain, Germany and many more.

However, it’s important to note that if you go over your allowance, it could cost you a little more.

EE

EE charges £2 a day in Europe, but there’s a 30-day package if you want to travel longer.

However, not all countries are affected. To check if your goals will cost you, visit the EE website.
