This Morning presenter Alison Hammond broke down on the ITV show today while being comforted by her co-stars, including Dermot O’Leary. Alison was particularly touched by a call from a mother whose daughter is struggling with her weight
Alison Hammond was comforted by her This Morning co-stars as she collapsed live on air today.
The presenter was particularly moved by a phone call in which a woman called to admit she was worried about her teenage daughter as she didn’t know how to help her with her eating disorder.
Alison – who has spoken openly about her own struggle with her weight – said she was touched by the young woman’s story as she tried to hold back her tears.
Speaking of the segment, Alison said, “Can I just say something? Apparently I’ve had – I get annoyed – I’ve had obesity all my life. And what it is is that your regulatory system is out of whack. So obviously you can’t control wanting to eat all the time.”
“And I think what a lot of people don’t know is that obesity is a disease. You can’t help but want to eat all the time,” she added as she burst into tears. She was comforted by Dermot and Deirdre as she added: “Sorry, I understand – sorry.
“Because I think people look down on people just because they’re so tall and there’s nothing they can do about it if they have a disease. When you’re in, it’s difficult. You want to eat and you want all the bad things and you know you don’t look right. I’m sorry, it touched me.
Deirdre then asked Alison what she would say to the teenager if she could.
“She needs help, I think. The NHS needs to see it as a disease. People help anorexics but not overweight people and that’s why so many people turn to surgery and we don’t know what to do. It really affected me,” she said.
Dermot then turned to her to offer his support. “You know what Al? Just opening up like that, maybe that helped her,” he said, as Alison admitted, “It’s so hard, people don’t realize it.”
Fans rushed to social media to praise Alison for being so open about how she was feeling.
“More real feeling from Alison in 30 seconds than from certain other people in 30 years. X #This morning‘ one wrote, while a second added online: ‘ #This morning Alison, you are beautiful inside and out. You are worshiped by so many x’s that you touch the hearts of many x’s.”
A third shared: ” #This morning Alison what an inspiration you are. Never apologize for telling the truth and embracing a state that is only hidden. Your real people look and call you lazy, but medical issues increase body weight.”
“Alison Honey… the struggle is real every day. I can’t tell you how very many of us relate to your situation #This morning‘ a fourth wrote as they offered their support on social media.
