You are probably a fan of Need speed; The franchise — which has been around for about 28 years at this point — has racked up around 150 million sales in its lifetime. It has been overseen by some of the most notable names in racing including EA Canada, EA Black Box, Slightly Mad Studios, Criterion and Ghost Games.
Although the series has had its fair share of troubles of late (it turns out people don’t want weird live-action cutscenes in their racing games), veteran gamers still fondly recall the happier days of NFS – and why not? Titles like Need for Speed 3: Hot Pursuit are classics for a reason. Whether it’s the incredible looking tracks, the challenging police chase scenes, or the 3D accelerated graphics, the game made a splash when it was released – and that notoriety has never really waned.
How nice, then, to see that the game – which rocks its original models – looks absolutely amazing even in 2022? The video embedded above shows footage of Hot Pursuit ported to Unreal Engine 5. Modder David Kerekes said that he “just started working on the game” and that here we see a very early look at the game after Hometown and Atlantica were migrated to Epic’s latest engine. Kerekes apparently used “various NFS modding tools and some Houdini and Python” to get everything working – but this is the project at a very early stage where he “has barely started working on it”.
If you’re hungry for more Need for Speed action, you’ll be happy to know that Electronic Arts Codemasters is bringing Cheshire and Criterion Games together to work on the Need for Speed franchise
This follows an announcement by EA in 2020 that the Need for Speed franchise was being returned to Criterion, as caretaker developer Ghost Games transitioned to an “engineering hub” instead – whatever that means.
We know precious little about the next Need for Speed game at this point; all we know is that it is actually in development and has been under construction since at least June 2020. Maybe we’ll hear more about that this year? Let’s wait and see what happens next month during the definitely not E3 period.
