Treasury Secretary Michael McGrath announced that around 563,300 workers have yet to file income tax returns for the past year.
That amounts to one in four workers leaving a total of €400 million in cash yet to be claimed.
The figures were provided in response to a parliamentary question by Fianna Fail TD Aindrias Moynihan, who claimed workers could be missing out on between €500 and €1,000 worth of cash.
The Cork TD is urging people to go online to file their taxes as they could be entitled to a tidy sum of cash with earnings paid out within days.

He told the Irish Sun: “Over a four year period it could be anywhere from €500 to €1,000 per person per year.
“People are under pressure to pay ordinary bills and there’s some of their own hard-earned money just sitting around here, so it’s very important that they have access to it.
“It’s easy enough to make a claim as it can be done online or on paper.
“A lot of people don’t expect or think they have taxes that can be claimed so they might overlook them.

In response to Deputy Moynihan, Secretary McGrath urged people to go online and claim their money.
He said: “The moral of the story is everyone should come back.

“A lot of people are entitled to refunds, but in my experience they have to go online and get in touch with the system where the refunds are issued quickly.
“The message to people is to check how they are being repaired. It’s easy to go online and make a claim.”
