Thousands of items are being sent back to the UK every day after failed customs checks, according to a Post

Thousands of items ordered by Irish consumers from UK websites and other sellers are being returned by An Post because they fail EU customs checks, the head of Ireland’s postal service has said.

The returned items are mostly items sold online by UK small and medium-sized businesses and delivered via the UK Post Office, he wrote in a scathing letter to the Financial Times newspaper.

The letter reveals the Irish postal service’s frustration with its British counterpart.

“The level of disruption for SMEs has led many of them to simply ignore trade with Ireland, a full member state of the EU (and where EU customs rules were first introduced).”

Trade from the UK to Ireland via postal channels has fallen 52 per cent in a year, he said.

Mr McRedmond said the main problem was that the UK Post Office had refused to put in place the systems needed to comply with the new EU customs rules that will apply to the UK post-Brexit.

“The British government seems disinterested,” he said.

From January 2023, the same customs rules will be binding across the EU, so the break with Ireland will be repeated with every other EU country unless the necessary action is taken, he wrote.

“The UK government should immediately insist that Post Office Limited put in place the necessary procedures for exports to the EU to keep international trade going and to support UK businesses and consumers,” he wrote.

He urged Britain’s Royal Mail to ensure trade is facilitated by introducing a duty-paid system to help UK companies’ EU consumers, he wrote. Thousands of items are being sent back to the UK every day after failed customs checks, according to a Post
