Thousands of people have joined a march through central London in response to a call to arms by Volodymyr Zelenskyy to celebrate a month since the outbreak of war.

Ukraine’s President earlier this week called for global protests against the illegal invasion of his country, which began on February 24.

He spoke English, which he rarely does, and warned the war was “only the beginning” of Russia’s attack, as several cities lay in ruins and thousands of people had been killed on both sides.

Thousands of people took to the streets today to honor his plea and took part in similar events taking place around the world this week.

In London today, protesters converge on Park Lane before marching into Trafalgar Square.

People waving anti-war messages marched in Greece, Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, Glasgow and Lithuania to show their anger at Vladimir Putin’s brutal war.

In Poland, where millions of people have fled from the war, thousands stood in the main square in Kraków.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said people “have to take the call”.

He added: “In an urgent video message President Zelenskyy has called on the world to take a stand – for Ukrainefor freedom and for peace.

“We must answer that call.

“This Saturday, a month later President Putin’s criminal invasion Thousands will take to the streets of London in solidarity with the people of Ukraine. Will you join us?

“This is our chance to send a message that resonates around the world: London stands with Ukraine and this atrocity must end now.”

It comes after President Zelenskyi’s moving message to people around the world.

The Ukrainian leader said: “Russia’s war is not only the war against Ukraine. Its meaning is much broader.

“Russia has started the war against freedom. This is just the beginning for Russia on Ukrainian soil.

“Russia is trying to conquer the freedom of all people in Europe. Of all people in the world.

“It tries to show that only gross and cruel violence counts. It tries to show that people don’t matter. That’s why we all need to stop Russia, the world needs to stop Russia. The world must stop the war.

“It’s been a month. As long as. It breaks my heart, the hearts of all Ukrainians and all free people on the planet.

“Therefore I ask you to oppose the war… Show your position, come out of your offices, your homes, your schools and your universities, come in peace.”

The United Nations has so far confirmed 1,081 civilian deaths and 1,707 injured in Ukraine since the invasion but says the death toll is likely higher.

About 136 children have been killed in the invasion so far, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office said on Saturday.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said 1,351 Russian soldiers were killed and 3,825 injured, although Ukraine says the number is much higher, at around 15,000.
