New Zealand: Seven die in horrific crash near Picton

Tributes were paid to three generations of a “living family”, including a baby tragically killed in a horrific head-on collision.

Seven people who were traveling in a van died when their vehicle collided with a refrigerated truck.

Two passengers survived the impact and are being treated at the hospital. One was said to be in serious condition and another in serious but stable condition.

A police chief told the media: “It is absolutely tragic how in the blink of an eye seven lives have been lost.”

The van was destroyed in the impact and almost completely crumpled.






Some of the family members died in the head-on collision in New Zealand

The victims from Auckland, New Zealand included members of the Filipino community.

They had been staying the night at a friend’s and were on their way home when the accident happened “in the blink of an eye” south of Picton on New Zealand’s South Island.

The friend, called Bill, told it NewstalkEG : “You spent some of your last hours on earth with me on Saturday evening, Sunday morning.

“It was a vibrant family — my boyfriend was a high school teacher … his wife started an online business and he was really proud of her.”

He said the family has four children and one of the sons married a Taiwanese woman who died with the couple’s baby.

“I was really taken with this young woman, she was so lovely and it really hits me that she’s gone and the baby is gone.

“Your husband survived … he will wake up and find that he is alone now.”

Inspector Simon Feltham, commander of Marlborough Police, said an investigation into the collision had been launched.

He added: “Police can confirm that one of the deceased was the driver of the van at the time of the accident.

“Therefore, the matter will be referred to the coroner in due course.

“Police’s focus remains on gathering information to assist the coroner and assisting the victims of this crash and our first responders.”

Aukland Filipino community leader Romy Adanga said he was devastated to learn the people killed were members of his community, reports the New Zealand Herald.

“This is truly terrible and shocking news for the community and all our thoughts are with the families and those affected,” Mr Udanga said.

Matilde Figuracion, a Filipino woman living in Wellington, was believed to have taken the same ferry as those involved in the crash and was just minutes behind them.

She said she was shocked when she heard the news.

Emilie Shi, a former consul-general of the Philippines, has confirmed that the bodies of the deceased were transferred to Christchurch, and the city’s consul-general is helping with the matter.
