Three groundbreaking iPhone 14 features you missed at Apple’s launch this week

APPLE’s new iPhones have tons of tricks – so it’s hard to take them all in at once.

Here are three brilliant iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro features you might have missed at this week’s Apple event.

action mode

Video on iPhone never gets much attention, but it’s made huge strides in recent years.

now Apple introduced another major advancement: Action Mode.

This allows you to record “incredibly smooth” video even when you’re walking, running, or being carted down a rough road.

It works by capturing the entire sensor – a wider image than usual – and then using the extra data for cropping.

There’s some extra math, but the result is a massive reduction in jitter, movement and vibration in your shot.

So if you’re trying to capture the action, it looks like Hollywood. GoPro who?

Better still, it’s available on iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro.

crash detection

Crash detection is another feature that will be rolled out across the range – iPhone 14 and 14 Pro.

It works by using the sensors in your iPhone (as well as GPS) to detect if you are involved in a serious car accident.

And it automatically dials 911 if you’re unconscious and can’t reach your iPhone.

Apple said it tested the feature on a huge dataset of crashes to make sure it works when it needs to.

It’s not for small bumps – so it shouldn’t activate in a low-speed collision in a parking lot, for example.

“It’s designed for severe, life-threatening, high-impact front, rear, side-swipe, T-bone, and roll-over crashes,” Apple said.

It could be a real life saver, although hopefully you never have to see it in action.

The smartness of Always On

Unfortunately, this last feature is only available on the iPhone 14 Pro – but it’s very cool.

Apple has equipped the 14 Pro with an always-on display, so you can constantly see the time and the latest information without having to tap the screen.

It couldn’t come at a better time as the new iOS 16 update completely overhauls the lock screen to allow for customization and widgets.

Now the lock screen is more useful than ever — and Always-On makes it extra accessible.

But it’s a smart system, designed not to drain your battery too much.

For example, it changes the brightness depending on the ambient light where you are.

And if you put it in your pocket – so the screen is completely covered – then the always-on display turns off.

Apple has managed to maintain excellent color accuracy even with Always-On, so your lock screen wallpapers shouldn’t look weird when the display is dimmed.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro will be available in the UK and US on Friday 16 September – but are available to pre-order now.
