United States: Three dead in shooting at Maryland manufacturing facility

Three people are believed to have been shot dead after a gunman opened fire on a manufacturing facility.

The shooter was aimed at the Columbia Machine, Inc. facility in Maryland, Washington around 2:30 p.m. this afternoon.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said there were “multiple deaths” before the suspect was shot and injured in a confrontation with a Maryland State Police officer.

The shooter is believed to have been hospitalized, but her condition is unknown.

The police officer is also believed to have sustained minor injuries and another victim remains in critical condition.

A statement from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook said: “At approximately 2:30 p.m. on June 9, 2022, deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 12900 block of Bikle Road, Smithsburg, MD regarding a shootout.

“At this time, the sheriff’s office can confirm that there are multiple victims and the suspect no longer poses a threat to the community. This is a rapidly evolving incident and we will release information as soon as we are able.”

Police confirmed the suspect fled the scene before they arrived at the scene before releasing a description to responding units who encountered the suspect vehicle in the area near Maplesville Road and Mount Aetna Road.

Gunshots were exchanged between the suspect and a police officer.

U.S. Senator for Maryland Chris Van Hollen, a Democrat, tweeted, “I am following the Smithsburg shooting closely and my office has reached out to local officials for more information and to offer our support.”

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan spoke to reporters and said that “my understanding is that three people may have been killed.”

Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are responding to assist local officials at the scene.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms tweeted, “ATF Special Agents are responding to assist our partners at the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in a shooting incident in Smithsburg, MD that resulted in multiple victims. The WCSO will provide updates as they become available.”

According to the Washington Post, 250 mass shootings have been reported so far in 2022, including 19 in June.
