Three-quarters of Brits visit the same holiday destinations year after year – because they find it reassuring.

A study of 2,000 adults found that nearly three-quarters (73%) have also returned to the same hotel abroad more than once, averaging more than four round trips.

More than half (55%) of those who have vacationed at the same resort see no reason to change their routine, while more than a quarter like seeing familiar faces they know.

And nearly a third liked the ease of not having to plan ahead because they already know what to expect.

However, 42% are considering stepping out of their comfort zone for their next vacation abroad.

Eamonn Ferrin, Norwegian Cruise Line’s vice president of international business, who commissioned the research, said: “The pandemic has really put things into perspective for us when it comes to taking every opportunity and trying something new.

“It is clear that much of the population struggles to be inspired to try something new, especially when it comes to the holidays.

“We see cruising as a great opportunity to see the world and experience places, activities and cultures that guests may never have experienced before – and we can’t wait for guests to be able to do so in 2022 and beyond.”

It also found that 42% have an annual vacation routine – but over half (53%) intend to visit a place they’ve never been before on their next trip.

Experiencing a new culture, trying food they’ve never eaten before, and enjoying a mix of city and beach were also among the top intentions.

More than half are also planning to book their next vacation abroad in the next six months, according to OnePoll data.

43% would appreciate advice on their next trip – how to get a better deal, what to avoid and where to go – the top issues holidaymakers need help with.

The study also found that exploring a new place, experiencing a new culture, and feeling adventurous are the top things people enjoy most about a new vacation.

And 29% would love to travel across continents or countries but haven’t taken the plunge yet.

However, 56% felt it was too expensive, while 31% disliked the idea of taking multiple flights and more than a quarter wouldn’t know where to start when organizing.

It also found that 58% have yet to holiday abroad since the pandemic began, but 44% plan to be more adventurous now.

Eamonn Ferrin added: “It was also interesting to see the appetite for learning about a new culture and trying something different when it comes to holidays.

“It can be so easy to fall into the trap of doing the same thing year after year — but just making that extra leap can bring so many new memories.”
