Throw-in: Exploding costs continue, Dublin gets its first win and Kerry v Mayo costume rehearsal?

blank

Football league action dominated the weekend but the off-field incident is making headlines with Tom Parsons saying the GPA is prepared to take more action amid the players’ scene with the GAA about costs.

debt, Dick Clerkin, who joined Will Slattery, Sinéad Kissane and Donnchadh Boyle on this week’s Throw-In podcast believes a conversation about player welfare should take precedence over cost first.

“What is the GPA looking for in terms of a sustainability model for the inter-district game?” he asked on the show.

“Because I don’t think anyone can agree that it’s a good idea to ask a county team to train seven days a week around the Championship season and that can be funded because that’s what Tom Parsons said so effectively. If it’s the case with county teams now that the standard is required to train five to six times a week, that’s not sustainable, that’s not fair and it’s not sustainable.”

Returning to the matters on the pitch, Dublin finally got its first win of the year with a win over Tyrone in Omagh, albeit in the face of a very poor performance by Tyrone and it raised the question of whether the incumbents could be in trouble. At Tralee on Saturday night, Kerry eliminated Mayo with a last-minute spare but panelists predicted it could be a costume rehearsal for something bigger at Croke Park in the summer.

Meanwhile, in Division 2, Cork’s football men are facing relegation after another defeat, this time at the hands of Meath, and the question everyone is asking is, what? What happened to Cork football and how can things improve?
