Pack your sunscreen, but grab an umbrella too – because Ireland’s heat record may be getting dramatically worse in many parts of the country today.

reland may have smashed previous August records last Friday and yesterday – but sunbathers must now contend with a nationwide yellow thunderstorm warning that runs from 3pm today until 3am tomorrow.

Speaking of Sunday independentAndrew Doran-Sherlock, meteorologist at Met Éireann, said parts of Ireland have broken new records in the past 48 hours.

“We provisionally broke our August all-time record. It had previously been 31.5C at Oak Park in Carlow in 1995, and at the same location on Friday it rose to 31.7C. That is a provisional record. It needs to be analyzed, but it is more than likely the case.”

He predicted the good weather will continue for a few more hours today, with highs of 27C to 30C – but then there will be a “big shift”.

“It will still be hot this morning and afternoon – especially over Leinster and Munster where we’ve seen the highest temperatures all the time – but then there will be a change,” he said.

“It has been exceptionally dry for the past week and we are now issuing a nationwide yellow thunderstorm warning which will last until 3am Monday morning. It will be a big change for the people.

“Due to the nature of thunderstorms, these are fairly localized weather events, so some locations will remain dry.”

However, he warned: “In the areas where we see storms they will be quite violent and slow moving, so we could see quite large accumulations in localized areas – meaning there is also a risk of flooding and even hail. It will certainly be a change from the weather we’ve had over the past few days.”

Earlier this week, he said Ireland would continue to experience “more unsettled conditions” and temperatures “fall to normal” for this time of year. These range from 15 °C in the north to 20 °C in the south.

“These are not bad temperatures, but there will be a drop,” he said.

However, the meteorologist also said warm weather was a possibility again later in the month.
