TikTok’s partner for the new SoundOn distribution service is… TuneCore

Last Wednesday (March 8) we learned that TikTok has Officially entered music distribution business with a new service called SoundOn.

TikTok’s distribution service allows artists to upload their music directly to TikTok and RESSO, and it can also distribute artists’ music to platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.

The platform is active in the UK, US, Brazil and Indonesia.

TikTok has now confirmed to MBW that BelieveLicensed digital distribution platform TuneCore has been selected as a distribution partner for SoundOn.

In short, this means that artists who upload their music to TikTok SoundOn will then have that music distributed to other platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.) through TuneCore.

We have indicated that TuneCore has been the distribution partner of the service since SoundOn quietly launched in beta in September of last year.

Before SoundOn existed, TikTok had another distribution partner: independent artist distribution platform UnitedMasters, which reached an agreement with TikTok in August 2020.

That agreement no longer applies, we said, but UnitedMasters Yes was selected as one of six TikTok ‘Certified Audio Partners’.

Equal disclosure in October, this ‘Audio Partner’ deal allows brands to leverage music distributed by UnitedMasters for mini-syncs on the TikTok platform.

Other TikTok Audio Partners include the Stockholm-based music producer, Translation audio and the Los Angeles-based B2B music licensing marketplace, Songtradr.

Last week, TikTok said its new SoundOn service pays 100% royalties to music creators for the first year and 90% thereafter, and offers a range of tools and advertising support.

According to SoundOn’s Frequently asked questionsartists will be able to “receive 100% royalties for an unlimited time” for In-Bytedance platforms including TikTok and Resso.

Meanwhile, TuneCore currently has three different options for its direct customers – including paying on a single or per album basis, or just uploading to social platforms.

The Social Platform option, which TuneCore launched in November 2021, no upfront fees. However, TuneCore will participate in what it calls a “small portion of the revenue” generated by these songs on social platforms.


In September, TikTok’s Global Music Leader Ole Obermann tell MBW: “In short, we are making it easier [independent artists] to get their music on TikTok and we’ll be working with them to get a much better understanding of how to reach their audience on TikTok. ”

He added: “Through SoundOn, we will organize the ecosystem of unknown artists in a way that does not exist today and has never existed before.

“I think that will make it easier for artists to find their fans. And then for the studios and publishers to find those artists. The [industry’s] I think the whole A&R process will become more efficient after it. ”Worldwide music business
