She told the PA news agency: “Joanna is really my oldest friend. I don’t mean she’s the oldest person I know, I mean she’s known me the longest ever and this is a project we’ve talked about for years and it’s very personal. for both of us.

“It’s about mom and us. We talked about how we and our moms have been young since we were 10, so it wouldn’t be possible to resist doing it to make a movie. It’s super personal.

“Like all things truly profound, it is incredibly liberating. It can be about something that feels heavy to the audience but the heavier it is, the lighter it is somehow.

“We had a great time and in many ways it was the perfect shoot we’ve ever had, both of us and I wanted more.”

Swinton also spoke about her hopes for those who have seen the film.

“I think for those of us who have finished watching the movie with mothers calling them a good thing, and those of us who have daughters it might be a good time to call them.

“If you haven’t, then I just think forgive, forgive yourself for not being a perfect daughter’s ideal or a mother’s ideal. Ghost stories at the end of the day and ghost stories after worship are always good.”

Hogg said it was “very difficult to put into words” how much the project meant to both Swinton and her.

She told PA: “I squeeze my heart because it brought us closer, if that was possible.

“We’ve known each other since we were 10 or 11 years old and this is the first time we’ve worked together on something so close to both our hearts and the conversations we’ve had when we make movies and all the ideas that went into it connected us a lot so it was a fun experience despite the sad theme.

“I feel like no one has seen Tilda this way before, she really took a lot of risks playing the two characters. Everything is very rudimentary and vulnerable. I feel very emotional about it.”

Hogg has tapped into her own life to document and inspire much of her filmmaking over the years.

“It’s a very dark film and it’s a very personal film,” she said.

“It was her idea of the name of the hotel, there was a lot of connection with my mother about the idea and creation of the movie.

“In a way, I am mourning her loss before the loss, the movie I am putting myself a little bit into the future and I always dread the moment my mother is no more, that It’s something that has haunted me for a long time. youth.

“This movie has haunted me since 2008, I wanted something about my relationship with my mother so I feel very sad that she’s not here to watch it right now.”
