Johnny Depp is set to reunite with ex-wife Amber Heard in a US court in a multimillion-dollar defamation lawsuit.

Here’s a timeline of the legal twists and turns of the tumultuous Hollywood romance.

– 2011

– 2015

Mr Depp and Ms Heard will wed at a private ceremony in Los Angeles in February.

In April, The Sun newspaper editor-in-chief Dan Wootton published an article in which he wrote in the headline that Mr Depp was a “wife beater”.

The actor is filing his defamation lawsuit against News Group Newspapers (NGN) – the owner of The Sun.

Ms. Heard published an op-ed in The Washington Post in December addressing her personal experience of domestic violence.

It is entitled: “I spoke out against sexual violence – and faced the wrath of our culture. That has to change,” but does not mention Mr. Depp by name.

– 2019

Mr Depp is launching a $50million (£38million) defamation lawsuit against Ms Heard, with his lawyers claiming the article falsely implied she was physically and sexually abused by the actor when they were married.

He claims that the article led to his being removed from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and that Ms Heard was the one who offended him.

The pair meet at the Royal Courts of Justice in London for Mr Depp’s NGN defamation lawsuit, which has been delayed due to the coronavirus crisis.
