Tinder at 10: ‘I was catfished by a fake Gabriel Byrne who kept cancelling on me’

When it was revealed that Tinder was celebrating its 10th anniversary, my first thought was, ‘Surely there must be some mistake?’ I probably only spent four or five years on the dating app, where people swipe left and right to find matches, but truly, it felt like 124 years.

Yet, in just four or five years, you can pack in a lot of Tinder experiences — good, bad, and downright outrageous. There was the college friend who matched with me and swore up and down he didn’t remember me, despite me driving him everywhere for five months in 1994. There was the match who insisted, after about three minutes of idle chatter one night, that he come over to my house RIGHT NOW. There was the Tinder date who gave it the full Jay Gatsby treatment on our first meeting — high-octane glamour and romance — then disappeared into thin air. There were so many profile pictures of men wrapped around tigers. So, so many men who had posted selfies with Brian O’Driscoll.
