WHEN it comes to the holidays, what we look forward to the most are those expensive new toys that you wouldn’t buy the rest of the year.

There are many different options here. So preparing yourself with all the information in advance will save you time.

Here are our tips for setting up your Xbox Series X|S.

Using an HDMI 2.1 cable with your Xbox Series X

If you’re lucky enough to snag the more expensive Series X and you’re also the proud owner of a 4K TV, then you want your games to really shine.

Your new console will come with the correct cable, an HDMI 2.1 versus a standard HDMI, so make sure you use this to connect your console.

Not all ports on your TV support HDMI 2.1, so make sure it’s connected to the correct high-speed port.

You’ll also need to change the resolution to 4K in the Xbox settings to get the full effect.

Use the Xbox smartphone app while you wait

When you turn on your Xbox Series console for the first time, you need to install a series of updates.

However, there is a way to speed up the process. While your console finishes updating, you can continue with setup in the Xbox Mobile app.

This allows you to queue games for download and change options on your console while it’s done.

Consider customizing the Xbox Start menu

While the home menu is fairly intuitive, you can also change the layout at any time.

If you go into the “View” menu, you can bring the apps you use most to front and center, as well as change your background and theme.

Here you will also find the dark mode to relieve your eyes.

Save energy on your Xbox Series console in Settings

One of the great features of the Xbox series is Instant On, which lets you jump right back into a game.

However, if you’re looking to save money, you’ll probably want to turn this off in settings.

If you go to the “Power mode and startup” menu, you will find the energy saving mode, which can save you quite a bit of money.

Turn on your TV through your Xbox

A number of modern smart TVs detect when the Xbox is turned on and wake up automatically.

However, if this is not the case, you can enable this in the Xbox options menu by selecting the HDMI-CEC options.

For this to work, you may also need to enable HDMI-CEC on your TV if it’s not enabled by default.

This is especially handy if you’re the kind of person who always loses the remote control.
