To Leslie’s Oscar-winning tactics “raised concern,” says Academy

Independent film To Leslie’s Oscar ad campaigns are “concerning,” the Academy says, but did not justify the film’s withdrawal of the nomination.
Last week, the organization launched a review of campaign procedures to ensure no guidelines were violated this year.
This was followed by nominations for the 95th Academy Awards, where British actress Andrea Riseborough received a surprise nomination in the Best Actress category for her role in To Leslie.
A statement released by the Academy on behalf of its executive director, Bill Kramer, said that “the social media and public relations tactics used by the film” had “raised concern.”

“Based on concerns that surfaced last week surrounding To Leslie’s awards campaign, the Academy began a review of the film’s campaign tactics,” the statement said.
“The Academy has determined that the activity in question is not of a level that would warrant de-nomination of the film.
“However, we have uncovered social media and outreach campaign tactics that have given rise to concern. These tactics are discussed directly with those responsible.”
Riseborough was nominated for her performance in the independent film To Leslie, in which she plays a single mother who turned to alcoholism after winning the lottery before changing her life when a motel owner offers her a job.
The film didn’t receive any recognition at the Golden Globes or the Critics’ Choice Awards, but did garner support from some of Hollywood’s most prominent names.
Stars including Edward Norton, Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cate Blanchett – who is also nominated for a Best Actress Oscar – have previously expressed their support for Riseborough and her performance.

A previous statement released by the Academy made no specific reference to Riseborough or To Leslie.
Mr Kramer’s statement on Tuesday continued: “The purpose of the Academy’s campaign regulations is to ensure a fair and ethical award process – these are core values of the Academy.
“In light of this review, it is evident that there is a need to clarify components of the regulations to help create a better framework for respectful, inclusive and impartial campaigning.

“These changes will be made after this bonus cycle and shared with our members.
“The Academy strives to create an environment where voting is based solely on the artistic and technical merits of eligible films and performances.”
The 95th Academy Awards will be held on March 12th at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
