Country singer Toby Keith has revealed he has stomach cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy after his diagnosis.

The musician, 60, took to social media on Sunday to announce the news, telling fans he has been battling the disease since late last year.

He turned to try to reassure his 1.2 million Twitter followers by stressing that it was “so far, so good” as he underwent some form of active treatment.

The seven-time Grammy Award nominee wrote: “Last fall, I was diagnosed with stomach cancer. I spent 6 months undergoing chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

“So far, so good. I need time to breathe, recover and relax.”

He concluded his statement, “I’m so looking forward to spending this time with my family. But I’ll see my fans soon. I can’t wait anymore. – T”

His followers were quick to support the star, with many responding to him in the comments section.

Among them was John Rich of country duo Big & Rich, who wrote: “Come on, @tobykeith.”

Another fan said: “Please take care of you and your family. We’re here to support working chemotherapy and to see you as soon as you can, not the day before!”

And a second response: “Family first @tobykeith Fans really understand. Restoration restore regeneration… God bless and heal you. ”

The Ohio State Fair announced on social media that the singer’s performance on July 28 had been cancelled, and shortly after, his publicist Elaine Schock revealed that he would not be performing any concerts. Any scheduled gigs “at the moment”.

Toby has been a popular member of the country community for three decades after first appearing in the early ’90s.

However, his big break took a few years and was achieved thanks to his 1999 release of How Do You Like Me Now?!

The tune reached number one on the Billboard Country Songs Chart and was also relatively successful on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart.

In January of last year, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts and later that year, he was inducted into the Nashville Writers Hall of Fame.
