The weekend brought us the INDIE Live Expo 2022, and an interesting game was TOKOYO: The Tower of Perpetuity, a challenging action-platformer coming to Switch on June 2nd.
Developed by //commentout and published by PLAYISM, it has been in Steam Early Access since late 2020 and has received some positive reviews and word of mouth. Its catch is that the tower changes every 24 hours, giving players a new challenge as they try to make it to the top. There will also be “light” social elements – when you die, a tombstone, “relics” and “last words” will be placed for other players to find when attempting the level.
Some of the official descriptions are below:
This 2D action game is set in Tokoyo – the Tower of Eternity – an ever-changing and diabolically treacherous auto-generated dungeon crawling tower filled with fiendish monsters and brutal traps. The Tower of Eternity is automatically regenerated by the game server every 24 hours (in real time), so players around the world can conquer the same dungeon every day, for just one day. Different traps and gimmicks await you every day, and you’ll have to compete against other players as you battle your way through. The dungeon contains various branches that offer a degree of free choice and randomization.
While the roguelike generation of random levels isn’t always everyone’s favorite approach, the social element – with all players attempting the same level every day – is a clever touch.
As always, let us know what you think in the comments!
