Top Gun: Maverick teased in trailer starring Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise looked lifeless at the premiere of the highly-anticipated Top Gun sequel this week, even though it’s been more than 30 years since the iconic original movie was released.

The 59-year-old actor may be nearing his 60th birthday milestone but he still has the same beautiful hair as when the first movie came out in 1986 – he was 23 years old then.

He attended a screening of the Top Gun: Maverick sequel recently, held aboard a retired aircraft carrier USS Midway in San Diego – where he waved to fans in the crowd.

And in keeping with the aerial theme, Tom – who plays Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in the upcoming action movie – personally flew a helicopter to the red carpet event.

The crowd cheered when he arrived at the screening, with the actor – who is said to be a producer on the new film – joking that getting into an Uber would be “too simple.”

The £125 million film was due for release in July 2019 but was pushed back to shoot the intricate flight scenes. Talking about the project, Tom said: “The film means a lot to me”.

He insists on doing his own stunts in the movie, including the jet flying. Director Jerry Bruckheimer, 79, said: “Every time you see him fly, it’s him on that jet.”

The film’s cast – which is due for UK premiere later this month – has been training for three months for the flights, with co-star Jay Ellis, 40, admitting: “We were all incredibly tremendous.”

And co-worker Glen Powell, 33, said that Tom required training so that they “didn’t faint or vomit” while filming the highly anticipated project.

Others in the film include Jennifer Connelly, 51, who is said to play Tom’s character’s love interest. Val Kilmer reprises his role from the first film, returning as Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky.

Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters on May 27.
