Tom Daley has raised more than £1 million to help bereaved children deal with the loss of a loved one.

The Olympic champion, 27, was told the money had been raised thanks to him during a televised Comic Relief fundraiser Friday night.

Tom took part in a 290-mile four-day challenge of Hell to raise money for a charity that helps grieving children, after losing his father as a teenager.

The father of one has called for donations to support the charity Balloons, as he begins his journey from London to his hometown of Plymouth, by foot, water, boat and bicycle.

Presenters Alesha Dixon and Paddy McGuinness told the sports star about the money he has raised during Friday’s live show on BBC One.

“Oh my, I’m so nervous,” Tom confessed as he stood on stage in front of the live studio audience.

Former Mis-Teeq singer Alesha later shared the good news: “I’m proud to announce that Tom’s total proceeds from Hell of a Homecoming are one million twenty seven thousand one hundred and eleven pounds!”

Tom beamed with joy before continuing to honor his late father and explain why he chose the charity he did.

The diver’s father, Robert, passed away from a brain tumor on May 27, 2011, at the age of 40, just days after Tom’s 17th birthday.

Speaking on Friday night, the star said: “It was a great project that I came across called Balloons, they help children deal with loss, which I went through when I lost my dad. “.

“They are wonderful people doing great work and a lifeline for so many children struggling with their grief.”

During his fundraising journey, Tom has met other young people who have lost a parent – including teenager Matilda and her mother in Devon.

“Matilda and Lena are the sweetest people and you can see they were going through a really hard time and it reminds me so much of my family and me when we lost our dad and the hardships that came with it. with it,” he recalled on Friday.

He added: “It’s really important to have that support system around you.”

Speaking about the challenge on Instagram last month, Tom admitted it was “the hardest thing” he had to go through physically.

Capturing a collection of snapshots from the epic journey on Instagram four weeks ago, Tom wrote: “Honestly, this is the hardest thing I’ve ever overcome! to @comicrelief because it will makes a big difference to so many people!
