Tom Jones denies reports he collapsed before Budapest concert

Sir Tom Jones has denied collapsing before the show on Tuesday night and insisted the last-minute cancellation was due to a virus infection.

The Welsh pop superstar has released a statement after it was reported that he fell ill backstage at Budapest’s MVM Dome ahead of the latest European date of his Surrounded By Time tour.

The 82-year-old said on Instagram that upon arriving in the Hungarian capital he developed “a sore throat” and was diagnosed with viral laryngitis.

He told fans he was “very sorry” that the show was canceled at the last moment but confirmed that it had been rescheduled for Tuesday, August 16.

Last year, Sir Tom released his 41st studio album, Surrounded By Time, becoming the oldest man to top the UK album chart.

His statement read: “Hello to all concerned: I traveled last night from the UK to Budapest and woke up this morning with an upset throat. A specialist doctor came to examine and diagnosed it as ‘viral laryngitis’.

“He strongly advises postponing tonight’s show and prescribing medication and vocal rest. I’m NOT ‘collapsed’ anywhere anytime, that’s pure rumour.

“Hopefully the inflammation will subside soon as I am looking forward to continuing my wonderful summer tour.

“Unfortunately, the show had to be canceled at the last minute, and I am very sorry.

“However, the show in Budapest has been rescheduled and will take place on August 16. Once again, thank you for your interest.”

He signed off the message with “TJ”.
