ARSENAL lost 2-0 to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg at the Emirates on Thursday after drawing the first leg 0-0 at Anfield.
Takehiro Tomiyasu has an absolute shock at right-back while Martin Odegaard’s composure and class in midfield means he’s one of the few bright lights for the home team.
Alexandre Lacazette successfully scored the penalty in the early stages after Bukayo Saka was dribbled close to the box.
And just a few minutes later, Diogo Jota left Takehiro Tomiyasu in a daze before Aaron Ramsdale attempted to dribble with his non-dominant foot and cross the line.
It was a pretty negative issue for the rest as neither team created any major chances until Jota sealed the win with 13 minutes remaining.
Arsenal lost the ball sloppily in the middle of the park, Trent Alexander-Arnold passed a signature ball over his head, and Jota grabbed it to his chest and knocked Ramsdale down.
It survived a VAR check that showed Gabriel just playing him side by side and the Merseysiders made it to the end without difficulty.
And here’s what SunSport’s William Pugh thinks of the Gunners’ individual performance.

AARON RAMSDALE – 6/10
Not much could be done for the first goal as Jota’s misplaced shot fooled everyone.
A superb double saves just before he headers from a corner to Ibrahima Konate before thwarting Jordan Henderson’s effort from the field.
Did not know that the English midfielder was offside in the second.
Defeated by a superb Jota finish to make it 2-0.
TAKEHIRO TOMIYASU – 3
There was a person who stinks absolutely.
Defeat by Jota was too easy when the Portuguese dribbled through the ring for him to score the opener.
Generally sloppy in and out of possession from then on.
Placed to pull Curtis Jones back after he let the Liverpool centre-back fool him.
GABRIEL – 5
Endure everything thrown at him.
Liverpool’s opener couldn’t be blamed and then largely saw the game play out in front of him.
Play Jota on the field – JUST – as the winger carries it on his chest and seals Liverpool’s victory.
WHITE BENE – 5
Solid enough for most evenings. Nothing could be done for Jota’s opener.
But letting the winger pass him too easily in the second half and watch his blush saved as Kaide Gordon blasted Jota’s pass.
Alexander-Arnold’s vital cross just before the mark now prevented an almost certain Liverpool goal.
KIERAN TIERNEY – 6
Professional show. Has earned his money.
Getting a punch in the face from Ramsdale in the second half, it was the most Scot-related thing that happened all night.
ALBERT SAMBI LOKONGA – 6
Sometimes he looks a bit confused when playing in midfield with Odegaard.
Played a great ball for Lacazette that the Frenchman should have scored in the 48th minute.
No major impact but OK overall.
BUKAYO SAKA – 5
One of his quieter games.
Robertson struggled to get down to Arsenal’s right as Liverpool’s depth of defense made it difficult for the Gunners to counter-attack.
MARTIN ODEGAARD - 7
Chic and calm under pressure throughout.
Play a little deeper to support Lokonga and outperform teammates.
The Gunners have missed out on his creative influence on the pitch he usually plays on.
EMILE SMITH ROWE (73 min extra) – 4
The game has largely passed him.
Beat a huge last-minute chance when an Arsenal corner cleared him at the edge of the box but he excelled through.
And killed a promising Gunner with 23 goals going forward when his feeble pass to Saka was easily intercepted when Liverpool were in front.
Understandably, the Gunners were looking for an equalizer.
GABRIEL MARTINELLI – 6
Full of energy and running and sometimes Alexander-Arnold has to worry.
But lack of end product whenever he gets a good position.
Beat Alexander-Arnold to force Caoimhin Kelleher to make an easy save in the second half.
Looks like he played better than he really was. Undoubtedly, disappointing for the Gooners.
ALEXANDRE LACAZETTE (sub, 73 min) – 5
His free-kick was sealed into the top corner before Kelleher got his finger on it and hit the crossbar.
Booked for a late challenge with Curtis Jones just before the break.
Shot over the crossbar when Sambi Lokonga conceded the net early in the second half.
Pickpocketed when Mikel Arteta chased to equalize.

EDDIE NKETIAH (replaces Lacazette) – 5
No impact from the bench.
THOMAS PARTEY (substitute Smith Rowe) – 3
Praised in the build-up for showing up for the game straight from the airport where he landed at noon from Afcon on duty with Ghana.
And made Arteta wish he’d stayed in Cameroon when he received two quick yellow cards and was sent off with minutes left.
The first goal came in the 87th minute before a stupid charge on Fabinho three minutes later sealed his fate.
