Charles Oliveira has been told that Tony Ferguson has “down the ladder” so he can move up the UFC lightweight division.
Oliviera recently submitted Justin Gaethje in the first round at UFC 274. The win was supposed to mark the second defense of his lightweight belt, but he was stripped of his title after losing 0.5 pounds in weight for the fight.
The Brazilian has finished off all of his last 11 opponents apart from Ferguson and was put at a distance by ‘El Cucuy’ in their December 2020 fight. Oliveira and Ferguson are on good terms and were filmed ahead of their respective bouts at UFC 262 encouraging each other last year.
MMA analyst Chael Sonnen believes Ferguson played a significant role in Oliveira’s rise, stating, “Tony Ferguson put down the ladder for someone else to climb up. That someone’s name was Charles Oliveira. Charles Oliveira isn’t where he is today and he wouldn’t be the world champion if it weren’t for Tony Ferguson.

“Tony, who is upstairs in the loft, is number five in the world. At 155 pounds at this particular time, you have to understand the timeline. At that particular time we had five stars. We had 10 amazing fighters, we had 5 stars and the amazing fighters couldn’t have stars on the list.”
Ferguson went unbeaten in five years during his lightweight heyday, winning 12 fights during that time. The former interim champion is now without a win in his last four fights and was knocked out by Michael Chandler on his last outing for the first time in his career.
Oliveira recently welcomed Ferguson to train with him at his Chute Boxe gym in Brazil. Ferguson was grateful for the offer but respectfully declined as he feels a rematch with Oliveira is inevitable once he’s back in the winning column.
“I really have to think about that because I see myself competing against him again. I know exactly what I have to do and I can’t really say no or yes to that,” Ferguson told MMA Junkie.
“I know right now that this is not the time for me to go to Chute Boxe and train with them. There are a few local gyms where I will be part of a team and help that team grow as good as I have.”
