THE cheapest electric cars with the longest ranges have been unveiled and there are 10 to choose from under £40,000.

As many drivers have started to switch to electric, some are still put off by the price and also concerned about battery range.

But there are now 10 electric vehicles available in the UK that could be classed as ‘more affordable’, offering ranges of between 239 and 300 miles on a fully charged battery.

A recent report by this is money highlighted the EVs with the longest stated ranges, many of which cost in excess of £100,000.

However, there are a few options available for £40,000 and under, which is an important price benchmark as it ensures owners avoid premium vehicle excise duty (VED) tax rates in the UK.

All new engines above the £40,000 price bracket will have to pay VED, which means an additional road tax of £355 a year for the first five years at the standard rate.

Here are the top 10 EVs that avoid a premium tax and can travel the longest distances between charges based on their “official” claims.

10. Nissan Leaf – 239 miles

Model: e+ N connecta

Price: £34,945

Launched in 2011, the Nissan Leaf was the fifth best selling electric car in the UK last year with 9,178 registrations.

The 59kWh battery offers longer range and has an official mileage between charges of 299 miles.

9. Peugeot e-208 – 248 miles

Model: GT 51kWh

Price: £34,995

While other Peugeot e-208s have a 50kWh battery, the highly specialized GT model’s is slightly higher at 51kWh.

It also boasts a longer battery range than the other models, with 248 miles as opposed to 225.

This car was described as “better than any competing EV in its supermini segment”.

Model: SE long-haul

Price: £30,995

This family-sized electric vehicle offers plenty of space and can claim a driving distance of over 250 miles between charges.

The MG5 EV is only sold with a 61kWh battery.

7. Volkswagen ID.3 – 264 miles

Model: Business

Price: £39,425

Only one specification of the ID.3 can make this list, and that’s the business specification.

It has a 58kWh battery and offers a range of 264 miles.

6. Cupra born – 265 miles

Variant: V1 58kWh

Price: £36,475

The Cupra Born is a rebranded version of the VW ID.3

It has a choice of a 58kWh battery or a larger 77kWh battery.

The Entry V1 specification has the longest official range at 265 miles.

5. MG ZS EV – 273 miles

Model: SE long-haul

Price: £32,995

The ZS ex is MG’s only electric SUV model and is available in four different specifications.

Prices start at £30,495 and go up to £35,495.

The cheapest model offers a battery range of 198 miles and the SE Long Range has an official range of 273 miles.

4. Kia Soul EV – 280 miles

Model: Discover 64.8 kWh long range

Price: £39,045

This compact family hatchback has been around for a while.

The entry-level version costs £32,845 and has a 39.2kWh battery and a range of 171 miles.

There’s also a Long-Range Explore option priced at £39,045 with an official range of 280 miles.

3. MG4 – 281 miles

Model: SE long-haul

Price: £29,495

This hatchback was launched late last year and is already a popular choice for many.

The cheapest version starts at £36,995 and has a maximum official range of 218 miles.

The mid-spec range lasts significantly longer at an impressive 281 miles.

Model: ‘2’ 64.8 kWh long range

Price: £36,795

This family engine is a popular choice.

It is currently available in the UK in three different grades from 2-4.

Kia’s Niro SUV was the third best-selling electric vehicle in the UK last year and has a range of 285 miles on a fully charged battery.

1. Hyundai Kona – 300 miles

Model: Premium 64kWh

Price: £37,750

The Kona Electric has the longest official range of any battery model under £40,000 today.

It’s available in three different tiers, SE, Premium and Ultimate, and prices vary between £32,450 and £39,900.

Official figures suggest this electric vehicle will travel 300 miles between charges.
