Jonny Voon, Head of the Sustainable Innovation Fund, Innovate UK examines…
The UK economy has suffered significantly at the mercy of Covid-19 over the past two years. Despite the ongoing uncertainty, there are many reasons to be hopeful. As we recover from the pandemic, we have a fantastic opportunity to build a greener, fairer and more resilient economy and society.
The key to a sustainable recovery is innovation. Young, vibrant companies and their inspiring entrepreneurs are the lifeblood that can revitalize our economy and deliver game-changing solutions to our most pressing challenges. You can help us develop a more resilient economy, promote equality, diversity and inclusion, and achieve the country’s net zero goals.
There are a multitude of early-stage projects and companies, as well as visionary leaders who have impressed me over the past few months, who are creating new products, services and processes that will help drive our Artificial Intelligence and Data Economy (AIDE). and minimize negative impacts on the environment.
These are my top AIDE innovations to watch in 2022 – exciting companies developing greener technologies:
Bendi’s innovative platform combines responsible fashion with the latest data science, helping fashion brands to measure, manage and communicate their environmental impact. Bendi uses machine reading technology to predict a garment’s environmental impact, giving customers the information they need to make more informed decisions and shop responsibly, dramatically reducing waste in the fashion industry.
As companies come under pressure to demonstrate their net zero ambitions, Spherics Technology has developed carbon accounting software to help them visualize the carbon impact of their operations and supply chain. Spherics gives companies the toolkit to support true net zero commitments, helping them to confidently communicate with stakeholders in an authentic and purposeful manner at a time when greenwashing is under heavy scrutiny.
The company has developed a free platform called Crowdless that helps people with social distancing around the world. It provides real-time data on how crowded supermarkets are so people can avoid crowds, choose the least frequented place and the best time to visit. The platform uses a combination of existing data sources and crowdsourced data combined with machine learning.
An AI-driven matchmaking platform that connects companies that want to become more sustainable with suppliers who can help them achieve their sustainability goals. This platform works for both sustainability providers (companies offering sustainable products/services) and searchers (companies looking for sustainable products/services), with AI technology streamlining the search process exponentially. Instead of trying to network and manually searching for the right partners, companies automatically receive a list of vendors to help them meet their sustainability goals.
Capital of Proodos
Many startups are struggling to scale up due to limited liquidity in financial markets due to the pandemic. There is a need for an entrepreneurial ecosystem that can support start-ups to create sustainable and inclusive growth. Proodos Capital has developed a virtual entrepreneurial ecosystem that reallocates financial resources in the form of donations from public and private sector stakeholders to build purpose driven businesses.
