Top Gear presenters Paddy McGuinness, Freddie Flintoff and Chris Harris have unveiled their favorite electric cars of the year.
At a virtual ceremony for the TopGear.com Electric Awards, the VW electric ID BUZZ – Volkswagen’s modern take on classic campervan design – took top honors after impressing the judges with its sleek and quiet style while remaining spacious.
The hosts of the popular BBC car show also revealed their personal top picks for 2022, including nods to Land Rover, Rivian and Polestar.
McGuinness settled on the Land Rover Defender as his first choice as he said he enjoyed driving it more than any other car he had ever driven with Top Gear.
He said: “So, I got in and I was like, OK, it’s electric… let’s go… it’s going to be what it’s going to be.
“And then I went full throttle. I have to say the first five seconds in this electric Defender, slamming my foot straight to the ground, is the most fun I’ve ever had in a Top Gear car, and I’ve driven quite a few epic cars over the years .”
Flintoff’s favorite was the Rivian R1T pickup truck as he felt it met so many of his criteria.
He explained: “It’s a pick-up truck. It is big. It has a lot of gadgets. It also has 800 horsepower, accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in three seconds and has a battery range of 300 miles with the small package, 400 miles with the large.”

The former cricketer and presenter added that it also had features he’d never seen on a car before, including a built-in air compressor and a detachable Bluetooth speaker.
Harris voted for the Polestar 1, which he liked so much he bought one for himself.
“For me, the Polestar 1 is one of the most interesting cars I’ve driven in the last 10 years,” he said.
“I always suspected that a hybrid would be the solution for me on the road, but I’ve never driven a hybrid that was a hybrid.”
The top picks were among the 18 prizes given out that night and voted for by the Top Gear team.
